brea list - portland edition.
Monday, November 10th, 2008 at 1:05 am
since i’ve been in portland this weekend, i thought it was high time for another themed brea list. this one is the portland edition. maybe i went a little overboard here and linked to too many things. whatever - come back later this week if you are overloaded. it’ll still be here.
horse feathers - if you are having a crappy day and you just want to relax, the first thing i would suggest you do is put on horse feathers’ “a house with no home.” it’s the equivalent of a warm cookie at the end of a hard day. and they live in portland. i think. the video below is just at someone’s house but i’m linking not for the video quality but the tone overall. i think it’s an accurate depiction.
olio united - a shop i like to hit up while i’m here. if i haven’t been to the actual store in a while, i pretty much know what they have via their great website. if you look at any red carpet photos of me, i’m probably wearing a dress from here at one time or another. mostly local and all indie designers.
reading frenzy - a very good comic/zine/independent press store in portland. the kind of place you could walk into and spend hours looking from book to book.
powell’s - if you read ever, you’ve probably been to the powell’s website at some point another. that could never prepare for the massive building that sits close to the center of portland. it literally takes up a block and you could get lost if not for the helpful maps.
voodoo doughnuts - any place open 21 hours a day wins my vote. also they do weddings. in addition to the obvious (selling donuts).
ground kontrol - vintage arcade games. i played tron tonight. need i say more? (except that maybe it’s also a bar.)
miranda july - i think technically miranda july lives in los angeles now but i associate her with portland. by far in the top 10 creative people ever. wait, yes, ever. also, if you have never seen the site learning to love you more, i urge you to go there right now. and complete an assigment. and then post it in the replies on this blog and on the site. at the very least, it will make you feel creative and you can tell people about it later.

You got to play Tron! I am quite jealous as I have not played the arcade version in many years. Excellent game and one of my favourite movies. They are suppose to be doing a remake/sequel movie soonish
voodoo doughnuts sounds like my type of place!
haha a donut wedding, how cool!
We totally saw you at Biwa! Jeff didn’t believe it was you, Lexi argued for, then we ended up on your blog! Hope you enjoyed your dinner, it was our first time there and we definitely did. Ground kontrol is pretty awesome too. Glad you enjoyed portland.
I sort of dropped into heroes in the third season.
So I was kind of surprised when I got the first season DVD and you’re not in it.
Really enjoying your blog and I hope you keep up showing us bits of the world from your view point.
Miranda July is amazing, so is voodoo donuts.

Fun! I’m going to have to say Voodoo Doughnuts is awesome. It’s not only that they’re open so long, but the actual doughnuts are INSANE. Raised doughnuts with Captain Crunch anyone? Strips of bacon on a Maple Bar? Genius.

I like that band. They sort of remind me of Iron & Wine. But with strings. Also, that looks like an amazing house. Man, I wish I lived in a place like that.
Oh, and speaking of Iron & Wine, did you know that Sam Beam is living in Austin now??? Isn’t that awesome? I’d love to just hang out at his place drinking lemonade and listening to him sing and play guitar. Oh, how cool that would be…
Wow LOVE that song! I just bought the album off itunes, thanks for the rec. I wonder if we would find any correlation between music you suggest and itunes sales? :p
Always wanted to go to Portland. I have a ton of friends that live in Washington. I’ve only ever been to Seattle though.

I use to love Tron.
Thanks for sharing some sites. (btw, you might want to check your olio united link)
I’m not awake enough to work on any assignments though. I may check out “learning to love you more” again later.
Miranda July’s movie “Me and you and everyone we know” made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. A funny, weird and sometimes awkward movie. Loved it.
With that title and the last post I almost thought you had been to Portland here in the UK, a real gem
http://portlanders.ning.com is where I am talking of.
But regardless, great blog, and great role in heroes and looking like it must be fun doing it.
Although I am indeed deaf (from birth)…I can hear a bit with hearing aid, and talk ok, as I also lipread, so good most don’t notice for a while I am deaf… THAT I take as a great compliment obviously.
I never signed…hhhmmm I do feel bad I can’t help those who are deaf and do sign, maybe I better learn it then
But I could hear that video above, and it is great.
Thanks for sharing it.
Nice to know everyone appreciates their ears.
Another fan of ya blog here Brea.
Rob.
p.s I hope you liked it here in the UK? :o)

nice thank you very much for this article.
I quite enjoyed Miranda July’s film “Me and You and Everyone We Know” as well. It was nice to see John Hawkes, a.k.a Sol Star from “Deadwood” (I miss that show).
If you enjoyed Ground Kontrol, then you should check out:
