reasons i love The Fringe.

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

as i am a fan of lists, here’s one. i love the fringe. at first, i wasn’t too sure but by episode three, i’m hooked. here’s why.

1) John Noble playing Walter Bishop is hilarious and amazing. he is my favorite part of the show. and his relationship with his son (played by none other than Josh Jackson) is brilliant and i expect will become even more interesting as the series progresses.

2) i miss shows like the X-Files and this seems to be filling a void. while i enjoy a serial show like Lost or (of course) Heroes, there are occasions where i just want to tune in for one episode and have things resolved by the end. the fringe is doing this. although they have overarching problems (the pattern! what is it?), they also have a case every episode that gets resolved. it works for the Law & Order fan in me.

3) there is a cow as a series regular.

4) pseudo-science. what can i say? i know so little about science, i will suspend belief to buy a lot of things as long as they throw in some science words. done and done.

5) they tell me how long the commercial break is going to be. “oh - only 60 seconds? well, i’ll just wait to get a refill on my drink then.” convenient and smart advertising.

i know some of you disagree and that’s fair. i could see how it couldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. but i’m enjoying what’s been established thus far. thank you, once again, j.j. abrams for creating a show i like.

bands i like.

i’m really into the mae shi right now. they’re good for getting excited and maybe making food or painting your room or something. or just dancing.

and i even like the instrumental track that falls into the middle of their new album that’s 11 minutes long. it’s hard to imagine any record label agreeing to that.

here’s a video of theirs.

other quick reviews.

css: donkey - not as good as some of their other stuff. but worth a listen. it seems a little bit rushed - like they were waiting to get it done and just recorded it.

she & him: volume one - why haven’t i heard of this band earlier? as much as i like 60s girl bands, you’d think i’d have been all over this one (although it’s more 50s). finally girls my age who love to wear vintage dresses start playing vintage music.

lemuria: gets better - reminds me of something i would have listened to about 10 years ago and for that reason, i keep spinning it. overall, i have to be in the mood for it.

lykke li: little bit ep - good things come in small four-song packages. although i feel like there is something i’m not quite getting here.
