brea list.

Monday, November 24th, 2008

this week’s brea list is a little different - i think i’m feeling all giving-ish because it’s the holidays. so here are a couple of cool things you can do to give (and also receive at the same time). i realize it’s a short list this week - mostly due to weekend brain overload.

TOMS shoes - have you heard of these shoes? if you’re my friend, you’re getting a pair for christmas. i already ordered the red boots for myself. for every pair you buy, they give one to a child in need. and here’s the campaign they are doing right now.

30,000 shoes to kids in 30 days. that’s a pretty amazing goal.

band from tv - if you follow greg grunberg on twitter, you’ve seen him promote this cd just about….every second. but it’s also great because EVERYTHING goes to charity. maybe some of you caught them at the grove last night. they are amazing to see live if you ever get the chance. if not, the cd should fulfill your greg grunberg-related needs.

childhood crushes.

Friday, November 21st, 2008

i tend to steal ideas and the a.v. club had a great one a while back - childhood celebrity crushes.

here’s my list as embarrassing as it may be.

1) mark-paul gosselaar - yes, zack morris was one of my all-time crushes. in 5th grade, we would name who would be which character out of our friends and the cutest boy was always zack and i was never, ever kelly. if only to be kelly…

2) jonathan taylor thomas - i was probably a bit too old to be crushing on jtt during home improvement, but i can’t deny it. my dream boy looked just like him. but my dream boy’s name was ryan.

3) will smith - in the fresh of bel-air days. not to say he has not grown into a handsome man, but i really liked his clothes and thought he was very funny circa 6th grade.

4) rider strong - boy meet world fame. not the main guy but the friend. he was sooo cute and had long-ish hair which i thought was alternative.

5) leonardo dicaprio - what teen girl crush list would be complete without leo? remember romeo and juliet? we watched it in one of my classes while reading the play and i was obsessed. the thing is he’s actually still pretty cute.

6) jared leto - if these were in an order, he would be at the top because of ONE SCENE - the one in My So-Called Life where rayanne freaks out because she can’t sing, “i wanna be sedated.” then, jordan catalano (jared leto) jumps on the stage, saving the day, and solidifying my crushes on rock stars everywhere for most of my early dating life.

here it is. in all it’s glory.

i think this will work.

Online TV Shows by Ustream

thanks for everyone who tuned it. above is me doing a live chat with some of my fans via twitter. it was sooo fun and you guys were so nice and hilarious.
(sorry if i seem a bit flustered - i was nervous. and i apparently cut my face off for the first half - why didn’t anyone tell me? overall, though, i think it went well.)

just trying to remind you.

ustream

details: live. interview. questions by you. have to twitter the questions to me (although i may use some i haven’t answered from emails). please mark them #bglive.

the brea list.

Monday, November 17th, 2008

first, i should say please tune into to ustream.tv tomorrow to see a live interview with me and you get to ask the questions. excited? i am.

now, for the brea list.

jean grae - jeanius - i really liked jean grae’s last album but didn’t even know this one was out until a friend told me i HAD to get it (thanks alyx!). she was right. i do not consider myself a hip hop expert by any means, but this is one of my very favorite hip hop albums of this year…by far. she is intelligent, sexy and a brillaint musician and lyricist. i’m sure you’ll agree. here’s another official website in addition to the myspace one above.

that’s the video for “love thirst.”

swallow me whole by nate powell - just read this last weekend and it’s really amazing. the art is simple but beautiful. the story deals with illness, family turmoil, crushes, and pretty much anything you can imagine. also, insects play a pretty important role. it’s worth the read for any indie comic fan.

lookbook - i find myself on this site a lot looking for clothing ideas. the other day, i had a whole conversation about how i think people in other countries dress better. it went like this. me: “you look good. like you’re from norway.” my friend lindsey: “what does that mean?” me: “…” clearly, this website has shaped my thinking without me actually realizing it.

the x-files season one - i started re-watching this and i must say it is amazing. if you can tear your eyes away from the very 90s suits scully is wearing, you’ll remember why you loved this show so much. if you are a baby-child and have never seen it, you should. i don’t like aliens or conspiracy theories and it is still some brilliant show making.

so many things.

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

lots of things.

comic news insider interview - jimmy talks about how we’re blog soul mates, among other heroes-related and comic-related things.

this week in geek interview - more interview.

(these both are live interviews)

also - in case you were highly disappointed with my london photos - the ones on ben templesmith’s site are great. scroll down - you’ll see me!

brea banner

if you wanna ask me questions, you can twitter me. yes, that means you have to join twitter. and no, they don’t pay me to say that. you can watch it all at ustream.tv or more specifically here on tuesday at 7 pm california time.

you can send questions to me any time between now and then via twitter by sending them to @breagrant. please mark them with #bglive so i’ll know what they’re for. and you can ask them live, of course. which i would like a lot.

also - you can just watch!

see you then!

brea list - portland edition.

Monday, November 10th, 2008

since i’ve been in portland this weekend, i thought it was high time for another themed brea list. this one is the portland edition. maybe i went a little overboard here and linked to too many things. whatever - come back later this week if you are overloaded. it’ll still be here.

horse feathers - if you are having a crappy day and you just want to relax, the first thing i would suggest you do is put on horse feathers’ “a house with no home.” it’s the equivalent of a warm cookie at the end of a hard day. and they live in portland. i think. the video below is just at someone’s house but i’m linking not for the video quality but the tone overall. i think it’s an accurate depiction.

olio united - a shop i like to hit up while i’m here. if i haven’t been to the actual store in a while, i pretty much know what they have via their great website. if you look at any red carpet photos of me, i’m probably wearing a dress from here at one time or another. mostly local and all indie designers.

reading frenzy - a very good comic/zine/independent press store in portland. the kind of place you could walk into and spend hours looking from book to book.

powell’s - if you read ever, you’ve probably been to the powell’s website at some point another. that could never prepare for the massive building that sits close to the center of portland. it literally takes up a block and you could get lost if not for the helpful maps.

voodoo doughnuts - any place open 21 hours a day wins my vote. also they do weddings. in addition to the obvious (selling donuts).

ground kontrol - vintage arcade games. i played tron tonight. need i say more? (except that maybe it’s also a bar.)

miranda july - i think technically miranda july lives in los angeles now but i associate her with portland. by far in the top 10 creative people ever. wait, yes, ever. also, if you have never seen the site learning to love you more, i urge you to go there right now. and complete an assigment. and then post it in the replies on this blog and on the site. at the very least, it will make you feel creative and you can tell people about it later.

london.

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

a quick london recap: it was fun! also, apparently, people in london love heroes. greg couldn’t go anywhere without being stopped.

here are a few photos from the expo.

london crowd

the crowd posing for me.

costumes!

this guy was nice enough to pose for me.

guys posing

these guys were cracking me up and took so many pictures, i made them pose for me.

ken and me

ken (who you might know as the german) and me.

the crowd. not too interesting of a video but this is what it looks like from my side. it looks like chaos. and it also looks like greg signing a dude’s shirt.
